Staying Race

A staying race is run over a long distance, in Australia generally 2000m and beyond, up to the 3200m of the Melbourne Cup. Staying races reward stamina, an economical action and a rider who can rate a horse through the middle stages. Tempo matters more than in sprints: a slowly run staying race can turn into a sprint home and completely invert the expected result.

In use

A slowly run 2400m becomes a 600m dash and beats the genuine stayers.
