Sprint

A sprint is a short race, conventionally up to about 1400m in Australia, run at a high tempo from the outset. Sprints reward early speed, an inside barrier and the ability to hold a position, and they leave far less time to correct a bad beginning. A wide gate hurts most over a sprint trip precisely because there is no time to cross without burning the energy needed at the finish.

In use

A 1000m sprint gives a wide-drawn runner almost no chance to find the fence.
