Sectional Time

A sectional time is the split recorded over a defined segment of a race, most commonly the first 600m, the middle section and the last 600m. Sectionals separate what happened from what it meant: a horse beaten two lengths after running the fastest closing 600m may have been the best runner on the track, while a winner recording a slow last 600m off a soft lead has flattered itself. Sectionals only compare fairly once adjusted for track, distance and going.

In use

The fastest last 600m in the race came from the horse that finished fifth.

On FormRace

FormRace ingests sectionals and normalises them for track and conditions so runs across different meetings are comparable.
