Out Wide

Out wide describes a horse racing away from the rail, covering additional distance on every turn. Being three wide without cover around a bend can cost several lengths over a middle-distance race and is one of the most common legitimate excuses in an in-running comment. Occasionally the wide lanes carry better ground and being out there is an advantage — but as a default it is a cost, not a choice.

Three deep with no cover from the 800m is worth several lengths.
