Betting Ring

The betting ring is the enclosure at a racecourse where licensed bookmakers operate, displaying prices and taking bets in person. Historically the ring set the market and the fluctuations there drove the starting price. Corporate and online betting have shifted most turnover away from the ring, but it remains the traditional reference point for on-course market moves and where large cash bets are still placed.

In use

A significant plunge in the ring shortened the horse from $9 into $5.50.
