Rail

The rail is the barrier marking the inside edge of the racing surface. At most Australian venues it is movable, and clubs shift it out several metres to spread wear across the turf. Its position changes the true distance of the race, which lanes carry fresh ground, and often the bias — a rail out ten metres can favour on-pace runners holding the fence, or disadvantage them, depending on the venue.

In use

The rail is out 6m from the 1000m, which adds distance and changes the bias.
