Barrier

The barrier is the individual starting stall allocated to a runner in the starting gates. Barrier one is closest to the inside rail. The importance of a barrier depends on the distance to the first turn: over a sprint with a short run, an inside gate saves ground and an outside gate costs it, while down a long straight the effect is close to negligible. Barrier statistics vary substantially between tracks and distances.

In use

Barrier 1 over 1200m at Moonee Valley is a significant advantage.

On FormRace

FormRace computes barrier win rates by track and distance, and reads the draw as one of its model inputs.
