Penetrometer

A penetrometer measures the resistance of the racing surface by recording how far a weighted probe sinks into the ground. Readings are taken at multiple points around the circuit and inform the official going rating, replacing pure visual assessment with a repeatable number. Clubs publish readings alongside the rating, and a large spread between readings signals an uneven surface that may produce bias.
