Barrier Draw

The barrier draw allocates starting stalls to the runners in a field, normally by random ballot after acceptances. Its significance depends entirely on track and distance: over a short trip with a quick run to the first turn an inside gate is a real advantage, while down a long straight the draw barely matters. A wide gate over a sprint trip forces a rider to either burn energy crossing or accept a position without cover.

In use

Barrier 12 of 14 over 1200m at Moonee Valley is a serious tactical handicap.

On FormRace

Barrier draw is one of the inputs in FormRace's model, and a wide gate over a sprint trip is one of the four checks that can flag a favourite as vulnerable.
