Steward
Stewards enforce the rules of racing at a meeting — starting inquiries, hearing protests, questioning riders about tactics, ordering veterinary examinations and declaring correct weight. Their published reports are the official record of what went wrong in a race, and they routinely contain form-relevant information that finishing positions alone conceal, such as interference, gear failure or a horse being found lame.
