Clerk of the Course

The clerk of the course is a mounted official responsible for the safe movement of horses on the track — escorting runners to the barriers, catching loose horses, and leading fractious runners to the start. Riding a calm, experienced stock horse, the clerk is the first responder to any incident on course and a settling influence for young or nervous thoroughbreds during the preliminaries.

In use

The clerk of the course led the colt to the barriers after he played up in the yard.
