Veterinarian

Racing veterinarians examine horses for soundness before and after races, advise on withdrawals, and conduct the post-race examinations recorded in stewards' reports. A veterinary scratching removes a horse from a race on welfare grounds, and a post-race finding — lameness, a slow recovery, an irregular heart rhythm — is often the explanation for an unexpectedly poor performance.
