Punter

Punter is the standard Australian and British word for someone who bets on racing. It carries no implication of skill or stake size — it covers the once-a-year Melbourne Cup bettor and the full-time professional alike. In market commentary 'the punters' means the betting public collectively, whose combined money determines the price and, by extension, what counts as a false favourite.

In use

Punters sent the favourite out at $2.20 despite the class rise.
