Drawn Wide

A horse drawn wide has been allocated an outside barrier, forcing its rider to either use energy crossing to a better position or accept a wide, exposed run. The penalty depends on distance: over a sprint there is no time to cross without cost, while a long run to the first turn or a long straight can neutralise it entirely. A wide draw on a heavily backed favourite over a short trip is a genuine reason to question the price.
