Soft covers ratings 5 to 7 on the Australian scale — ground with genuine give, affected by rain but short of heavy. Times lengthen, tempo often slows, and the bias can move sharply because the inside lanes cut up first. Soft ground begins to separate horses by action and pedigree, and it is the point at which wet-track specialists start to gain a real advantage over dry-track types.
