Overround

Overround is the amount by which the implied probabilities of every runner in a market exceed 100%. A market summing to 120% carries a 20% overround, which is the operator's theoretical edge and the hurdle every bet has to clear. Australian win markets frequently run overrounds around this level, which is why a small probability advantage over the market is not enough on its own to produce a profit.

In use

A field whose prices sum to 118% carries an 18% margin against the punter.
