Back
To back a horse is to bet on it to win, or to place, at a given price. It is the opposite of a lay, where the bettor takes the other side. In market commentary a horse is said to be 'well backed' when significant money arrives for it and the price shortens as a result — which is the signal market-mover tracking is built to catch.
