Fixed Odds

Fixed odds guarantee the price at the time of the bet regardless of what happens to the market afterwards. If a horse is taken at $6.00 and starts at $3.50, the bet still pays $6.00. This is the opposite of tote betting, where the dividend is determined after the race by the pool. Fixed odds are why the timing of a bet matters and why closing-line value is a meaningful measure of judgement.

In use

Taking $8.00 on Tuesday about a horse that starts $4.00 is a fixed-odds win of value.
