Place

A place bet collects if the horse finishes within the paying placings. In Australian racing that means first, second or third in fields of eight or more; first or second in fields of five to seven; and there is no place betting on fields of four or fewer. Place dividends are far shorter than win dividends, and place markets are generally less efficiently priced than win markets because less money goes through them.

In use

A $10 place bet paying $2.40 returns $24 whether the horse ran first, second or third.
