Spell

A spell is a rest period away from racing, conventionally counted from a break of sixty days or more, shown in an Australian form line as an x. Horses returning from a spell are often short of peak fitness, and many stables need a run or two to bring them to their best — though some are notably effective first-up. A short-priced favourite resuming after a long spell is a well-known vulnerability.

In use

First-up after a 20-week spell, he had won only once fresh in four attempts.
