Benchmark

A benchmark race is a handicap in which weights are set from each horse's official rating relative to the race's benchmark number. A Benchmark 72 is open to horses rated at or below a set level, with the horse rated exactly 72 carrying the nominated weight and others adjusted around it. Benchmark racing forms the bulk of the Australian midweek and provincial programme, and a rise from a Class race into a benchmark event is a genuine step up.

In use

A horse rated 68 gets weight relief against the 72-rated topweight.
