Declaration

Declaration is the confirmation of final riding and gear details for an accepted runner, typically lodged the day before the meeting. It fixes the jockey, any claim being used, and gear changes such as blinkers or a tongue tie. Gear changes declared at this point are publicly notified because first-time blinkers or a first-time tongue tie can materially change a horse's performance.

In use

First-time blinkers were declared for the second favourite the day before the race.
