Apprentice

An apprentice is a jockey serving an indenture with a licensed trainer while riding in races. Apprentices ride with a weight allowance that reduces as they accumulate winners, and they graduate to senior ranks once the claim is exhausted. A capable apprentice on a well-weighted horse is a genuine advantage; an inexperienced one on a heavily backed favourite in a tactical race is a risk worth pricing.

In use

The apprentice's 2kg claim brought the topweight back to a manageable 56kg.
