Mare

A mare is a female horse five years old or older, graduating from filly. Mares often race in restricted mares-only company and receive a sex allowance against males in open races. Many are retired to stud at the point their racing value is exceeded by their breeding value, which is why top-class mares are frequently retired mid-career while geldings of similar ability race on for years.
