Emergency

An emergency is a horse accepted for a race beyond the maximum field size, which gains a start only if a runner ahead of it on the ballot is scratched. Emergencies are listed on the racebook with an E designation and take the barrier of the scratched runner or the outside gate depending on the rules of the jurisdiction. An emergency gaining a late start can shift the pace map materially.
