Group Race

Group races are the elite tier of thoroughbred racing, graded Group 1, 2 and 3 in descending order of importance, with Group 1 the highest. They carry black type — the bolded listing in a sales catalogue — and are the races that determine championships and breeding value. Grading is set by pattern committees on prize money, field quality and history, and a race can be promoted or demoted over time.

In use

The Cox Plate and the Melbourne Cup are both Group 1 races.
