Maiden

A maiden is a horse yet to win a race, and a maiden race is one restricted to those horses. Maiden fields are the hardest to assess because the runners have limited or no form, and exposed maidens with many starts are usually racing below the standard of well-bred first-starters. Winning a maiden proves very little about a horse's ceiling, which is why a maiden graduate stepping straight into strong company is a common false-favourite profile.

In use

A city maiden can be a far better race than a country Class 2.
