Today's false-favourite watch

The favourites our model thinks are vulnerable.

Each race's public favourite is scored on how far our model's price sits from the market's, how split the market is, the barrier over sprint trips, and the pace the race is likely to be run at. We only surface the suspect band and above.

Measured, not asserted: over 1,895 settled races, favourites in the suspect band won 26.3% against a 32.7% base rate (-6.4 pts, n=293). The weaker “watch” band showed no signal in the same test and is no longer surfaced.

Favourites are scored once today's markets open — new scores publish hourly from the first price feed. While you wait, see how yesterday's flags played out.

How it works

Ninety races in. A short list out.

01

Every runner gets read

Each AU flat meeting, each runner: 94 default model inputs covering market price, pace shape, barrier, weight, class, ratings and race context.

02

The card gets cut down

4 checks run against the favourite in every race. The ones that fail come back to you as a short list, with the reason attached.

03

Every call gets settled

Win or lose, each pick lands on the receipts page with its price and finishing position. Nothing quietly disappears on a bad Saturday.

What you get

Four things that make Saturday smaller, opened before the first jump.

Pro

Form, sectionals, speed map, pace

The workshop on every AU flat race: full form lines, last 400/600, who leads and who comes from behind. This is what used to leak on Free — it is why people who already do the work pay.

Pro

False-favourite detection

The one signal we can show beating its baseline: 4 checks run on the favourite in every race. Across 1,895 scored races, favourites flagged suspect won 26.3% against a 32.7% baseline. You get which checks fired. That is a reason to look closer, not a horse to back.

PULSE — market mover alerts

When a price shortens hard, somebody knows something. PULSE watches live market movement across every AU flat meeting and surfaces the moves worth a second look — steamers, plunges and late money, while the price is still there.

Pro

Model probability beside the market

Every runner gets a win probability from 94 inputs, shown next to the live price. Use it as a second opinion. We do not claim this beats the favourite — the public record is on the site so you can audit us.

The 4 checks, and what each one tests

These are the checks that carry weight in the score. Drift, class rises, cold stables, first-up runs and going are computed and shown to you as context, but they move nothing until each has been measured against results. Four that work beat fifteen that sound good.

CheckWhat it testsWhy it matters
Model vs marketHow far the model's own price sits from the market's on the favourite.A favourite the model rates a $4.50 chance while the board says $2.80 is either a mispriced horse or a wrong model. We publish which it turns out to be.
Market splitWhether the money is convinced, or spread across the top two.A short price that the market itself is arguing about is a weaker favourite than the odds suggest.
Barrier vs tripA wide gate over a sub-1400m sprint.Over a short trip there is no time to cross. Wide and hot means the favourite pays for the run before the turn.
Race shapeWhether the projected pace suits the way this horse needs to be ridden.A one-paced leader in a race with three other on-pace runners gets a race it cannot win from.

Price-provenance recheck pending.

In the historical test, backing the model's top pick blind lost money: flat staking returned -17.1% across 15,048 races. FormRace is not a tip sheet. It is a research board: it tells you which races are worth your time, where the market's price and the model's probability disagree, and what happened last time it said the same thing. The older backtest needs a clean point-in-time price rerun.

Frequently asked

The answers people want before they pay.

A false favourite is the shortest-priced runner whose price may be worth questioning. FormRace scores the favourite on 4 live checks: model-versus-market probability, the gap to second favourite, a wide sprint barrier, and projected pace pressure. These checks have been evaluated retrospectively, but not all are independently predictive, and the current board needs fresh validation. A flag is a reason to look closer, not a prediction or betting instruction.

In an older retrospective sample of 1,895 settled races, favourites flagged suspect won 26.3% versus a 32.7% overall favourite rate. That band contained only 293 races, and the current live board has not been revalidated against settled outcomes. This is an exploratory screen, not evidence of a profitable betting edge.

The historical backtest shows no advantage: across 15,048 AU flat races, the model's top-rated runner won 31.1% versus 34.7% for the favourite, with -17.1% flat-stake ROI. Its missing-odds fallback needs a clean point-in-time rerun, so these are disclosed historical figures, not validated current performance. Settled picks are available on the receipts page.

There is a free plan and it needs no card. Free opens the card for every AU thoroughbred flat meeting — runners, barriers, weights, jockeys and trainers, live market prices — plus every result, the morning briefing and the full public model record including the losing months. Pro is the workshop: form lines, sectionals, speed maps and the pace read, the false-favourite verdict, market movers, model ratings, and a daily shortlist once you already pay.

Free is the racebook and the receipts — what is running, at what price, where it finished, and how our model has performed. Pro is everything computed on top of that: form lines, sectionals, speed maps and the pace read, the 4-check false-favourite verdict with the reasons attached, PULSE market-mover alerts, model win probabilities and fair prices on every runner, and a daily shortlist (top three plus a roughie) as a speed layer for subscribers. Pro is A$49 a month. We do not claim this beats the favourite.

Neither. FormRace is a race intelligence platform. We do not accept wagers, hold accounts, process money or settle bets — you bet with whichever bookmaker or exchange you choose, if you choose to at all. And we do not simply tell you which horse to back: we show you where the model disagrees with the market and why a favourite looks suspect. A flag is a reason to look closer. The read is yours.

AU thoroughbred flat racing only — every metro, provincial and country meeting, from a Saturday Group 1 at Flemington to a Tuesday at Werribee. We do not cover harness racing, greyhounds, jumps or international racing.

The default XGBoost ranker and classifier use 94 inputs across 20 groups, including market price, pace, barrier, weight, class, ratings, jockey and trainer signals, and race context. They produce win probabilities as a second opinion beside the market price. Historical testing used chronological monthly splits, but the older missing-odds fallback needs a clean rerun.

Odds and market moves are polled during racing hours. Predictions refresh for approaching races. Retraining jobs run nightly and weekly, but a new model is served only when its data audit and paired holdout and market checks pass.

PULSE is the market-mover layer. It watches live betting movement across every AU flat meeting and flags the moves that matter — a horse shortening hard, late money arriving, a favourite drifting — so you see the shift while the price is still available rather than after it has gone. It is a Pro feature.

There is no free Pro trial — we would rather not ask for a card to hand one back. Instead the free plan is open with no card at all, the entire model track record is public before you pay anything, and Pro carries a 7-day money-back guarantee on your first payment. If it is not worth A$49 in the first week, ask and you get it back.

Yes to both. Pro is A$49 a month with no lock-in — cancel from your account page and keep access to the end of the billing period. If racing is just quiet for you, pause billing for up to four months instead: the account stays alive on the free plan and resumes without signing up again. Cancel within 7 days of a first payment and it is refunded in full.

Yes, though it assumes you want to read a race rather than be handed a selection. The daily briefing and the tip sheet are plain English, and the glossary defines every Australian racing term the site uses, one page per term. What FormRace will not do is hide the reasoning: a false-favourite verdict shows you which of the 4 checks fired and why, because a flag you cannot interrogate is worth nothing.

FormRace is an information and analysis tool, not a gambling service, and it is for over-18s. We do not accept wagers or take a cut of any bet you place. Set limits, never bet more than you can afford to lose, and if gambling is causing you harm call Gambling Help Australia on 1800 858 858 — free, confidential, 24 hours.
